With Singapore’s continuously evolving infrastructure and ongoing road improvement projects, ensuring traffic safety and smooth flow has become a critical priority. A key part of this effort involves Authorised Security Officer (ASO) performing duties as Road Marshals during road works.

ASOs serve as frontline personnel in traffic regulation and road safety, directly contributing to public safety and improving operational efficiency on Singapore’s busy roads. Their role is vital in managing traffic risks and maintaining order during construction activities.

For individuals who are physically fit, observant, and capable of quick emergency responses, ASO positions offer promising career opportunities. Understanding the responsibilities, qualifications, and training requirements for these roles is essential for those interested in pursuing this important profession.

What Does an ASO in Singapore Do?

An “Authorised Security Officer” (ASO) is authorized to manage and regulate traffic during road closures or construction activities on public roads. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that motorists and pedestrians are guided safely and efficiently through temporary traffic diversions.

ASOs act as the first line of activation against traffic congestion and potential hazards arising from ongoing infrastructure works, helping to maintain smooth traffic flow and enhance public safety during these periods.

Key Responsibilities of an ASO

1. Traffic Regulation: Direct and control traffic flow around road work areas & prevent accidents and ensure a safe environment for workers and road users.

2. Pedestrian Safety: Guide pedestrians through safe passageways & keep them away from hazardous areas.

3. Communication with Motorists: Provide clear hand signals, use of traffic wands, and verbal instructions to drivers & ensuring compliance with temporary traffic routes.

4. Setup and Monitor Traffic Control Measures: Assist in placing signs, cones, and barriers as part of the road closure or redirection plans & ensure all temporary traffic measures comply.

5. Emergency Response Coordination: Respond swiftly to road incidents, such as vehicle breakdowns or accidents in the work zone & collaborate with emergency services.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be eligible for deployment as an ASO in Singapore, candidates must meet specific regulatory and training standards set by LTA and the Police Licensing & Regulatory Department (PLRD):

1. Certified Training: Must complete the “Conduct Crowd and Traffic Control” course under the Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) framework.

2. PLRD Licensing: ASOs must hold a valid security officer license issued by the PLRD under the Private Security Industry Act.

3. Professional Conduct: All authorized officers must maintain high standards of discipline and follow the Private Security Industry (Conduct) Regulations.

This ensures that officers are only deployed in environments where their presence is both safe and effective.

Why Consider a Career as an ASO?

Working as an ASO is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to public safety while building a stable and structured career in Singapore’s security industry. Here’s why the role stands out:

High Demand: With constant upgrades to road infrastructure, the need for trained traffic control personnel is growing steadily.

Vital Public Safety Role: You’ll be at the forefront of ensuring roads are safe, not just for workers, but also for drivers and pedestrians.

Opportunities for Advancement: ASOs who gain experience and further their certifications can progress to roles such as Traffic Control Supervisors or even Security Management Officers.

Varied and Dynamic Work Environment: This is a role for individuals who prefer hands-on work outdoors and who thrive in real-time problem-solving situations.
